fedora core sucks
once again, today, i got the itch to stray away from my trusty debian/ubuntu and try one of the “other” linux distros, and as usual, i was sorely disappointed.
i elected to give fedora core another shot. the last time i tried it was version 3, on my home computer which is an athlon xp based system. i never managed to install it because the installer kernel panicked immediately no matter what i tried to do. this time, with fedora core 4, i was hoping for better luck on my pentium 4 system at work. no dice. same problem, kernel panic right off the bat. so much for that idea.
so instead, i’m toying around with freebsd on one of the dev boxes here at work and solaris on my workstation to try to get a little (more) unix experience under my belt. it has proven in the past to be considerably different than the linux world, and i find that intriguing. i’ve experimented with both of these operating systems before, and came away frustrated. perhaps i will persist a bit longer this time.

Hi Dave.
I was in the same boat and tried FC6 tonight. Man, what a mistake that was. I should have read up, because apparently they screwed up the distro and the i586 distro was actually for i686 machines. I couldn’t get the internet to work and without internet, well, who cares.
I’m reinstalling Ubuntu now. Never again. It’s too bad, I like Fedora’s eye candy, and we use Red Hat at work, but this is just … stupid.

As far as the eye candy is concerned, I’m not sure if you’re referring to the default theme or the compiz effects that FC uses. Either way, both are definitely do-able on Ubuntu, just not in the out-of-the-box fashion with which I am told FC handles it. However, that should change by the time Feisty is finished.

A little bit of everything. Actually, I think the GUI (although both use GNOME) is much more responsive on FC than Ubuntu. However, I just couldn’t get the stupid thing to work.
Oh well. I ended up finding some themes for Ubuntu to make me much happier. I just wish they’d get rid of that poop brown color for the default. Ick.

@brian:
No. Debian w/o X ftw.
