some of you might have seen or heard about the driver’s licensing scandal here in tennessee. it’s being called operation crooked highway by the local news media. apparently, in may of 2004 tennessee passed a law allowing undocumented immigrants to get driving certificates, which would explain the high concentration of illegals here.

as much of an issue as that is, that’s not the crux of this discussion. you see, apparently what’s been happening is that 2 state officials and the winchester driving school have been accepting bribes to issue certificates to people who shouldn’t have them… to the tune of about 1,000 certificates. they were ousted by the fact that the illegals who came in to get the driving certificates couldn’t even communicate with their examiners. not even so much as reading the letters off of an eye chart.

this really makes me proud of my state government, especially when you look back over the recent history. speaking specifically of the safety department, the seattle p.i. said, “The department has been at the center of a series of scandals, including the hiring of Highway Patrol officers with criminal backgrounds, ticket-fixing and an atmosphere of political favoritism.” yep, that sounds about right.

governor bredesen says he’s going to look into this whole thing and make some suggestions about the relationship between private driving schools and the DMV. he also says this is a corruption issue, not an immigration issue. thanks for that, governor… like we didn’t have some immigrant rights morons to tell us that already. heaven forbid that we actually punish people who break our laws by essentially breaking into our country, forging documents, bribing people to get driving certificates so they can drive without insurance putting us all at risk.

it’s nice to know that someone who is here illegally, who cannot drive, who cannot read our language or communicate with us on any intellectual level can spend $40 and get a driving certificate. $20 bribe to the instructor, $20 bribe to the examiner at the DMV and you’re in.

bredesen also mentioned that he intends to review the handgun licensing process here, since it works essentially the same way; it’s a good thing, too because the entire process isn’t nearly obfuscated enough. with as easy as it is to get a conceal carry permit, it’s a wonder the streets don’t run red with blood from shootouts in the street over parking spots!

you see, to get a handgun license (that’s a license to KILL mind you!) here in TN, all you have to do is pay $100 or so to attend an 8 hour training course after which you have to pass a written test as well as a range test. after that, you’ll be issued your certificate which you must take to the DMV along with your birth certificate where you can schedule an appointment at the nearest police station to have all 10 fingerprints taken like a criminal so they can do a background check on you. take everything back to the DMV and turn it in along with the $110 licensing fee and then hopefully they’ll mail you your license in the mail inside of a few months or so.

great job tennessee! way to make things easier on those poor illegals and stick it to the law abiding citizens. bonus points for being totally corrupt while you’re doing it, too! what’s next on the agenda?
