THe problem with linux is it isn't windows and all the complaints are legit. Its just like buying a second car.

My second car doesn't have the light switch in the same position. The door handles are relocated someplace new. Heaven forbid even the seat adjustment is in the wrong position as is the button for the recliner. Can't these people build a decent car at all, it will never be ready for the roads because of these and other relocations of controls.
Worst of all the engine is in the rear of my classic porsche. It should be in the front like my edsel.

I know some differences between win and Ubuntu: when tryed to install a belkin usb wireless in win xp was a pain where you know, installed the driver, followed the instructions , mounted the usb thing and taraaa.... nothing absolutely nothing, the win didnt found the drivers, tryed again and... the same rubbish. Did become angry, as had a dvd with ubuntu 9.10 from a magazine deleted al the xp and installed it, tryed again. Nothing. Until I saw at the top ritgh of the screen a baloon asking where liked to connect. That was a difference between plug and pray and plug and play.

I have a problem with how Ubuntu is steering itself towards the desktop in that it seems to me that they are adding everything up to and including the kitchen sink to their distribution, and while that can mean gains in UI and features it means that your risking your performance and stability on code that is not as well tested as the rest of your system.
This goofball clearly didn't even bother to lift a finger before asserting that linux wasn't ready for the desktop, If he had I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that there are a handful of arguments that may have actually been legitimate, but because hes coming from a Windows background he's looking at Linux through the Windows kaleidoscope so all he sees is 'something that doesn't work like Windows' which really is why the rest of us love it so much.
I entirely agree, keep yourself and your windows-goggles off my lawn.

Please donate your old boxes to a church-group or some needy student in these hard times! To comply with the law, and with Microsoft's leasing policy, you can now replace Microsoft OS with the free (download from the net) Ubuntu OS, which can be set to erase the hard drive of all traces of the “illegal to give away ” Microsoft system and your private information, before donation! Now, explain to your lucky recipient that all the manuals they will ever need are available for free on the internet! Just ask for them in Google! OpenOffice, which is installed already is plenty adequate for homework assignments and with a little exploring, everything else can work well too! Happy computing!

The problem with the 'n00b' article was not that the user was new to Linux, but that he DID NOT DO ANY RESEARCH WHATSOEVER before he wrote his article. If one writes an article about problems with Linux, they should at least read about who makes the drivers. For instance, he claims that Ubuntu uses a 'non-Linux' driver for Nvidia chipsets. Here is the amount of research required to disprove that:

Google: nvidia linux
Click First Result

He has no excuse for making people believe that the Linux community is leeching off of the Windows community for GPU support. While I find this rant slightly distasteful, it's obviously a rant, which anyone is entitled to.

Also, I think it will be painful at first for the currently Linux community to embrace n00bs. It's an elitist and sometimes harsh and unhelpful community, but we have our fair share of good Samaritans. Someday, a larger piece of the populous will be using Linux, but they have to break their fear of learning new things. The reason there isn't much of a GUI for configuring every aspect of Xorg's configuration is because there are literally thousands of possible options you can put in that file. And unless we want a GUI that has about 1000 checkboxes and 200 text-entry fields with an extra configurator for dual-head, its easier to just copy-paste configs from the internet.

All in all, Linux isn't ready for the 'mainstream'. It's ready for those lucky enough to have a guru around. It's ready for those brave enough to try something new and persistent enough to keep using it until they know what's going on.

Well, I found the original article you are responding to was a much better article than yours. I think you lost vision to the message that the other article was intended to convey. Which is Ubuntu fool-proof enough for even the biggest computer putz to install, use and be productive with.

You see, I think you fail to realize the nature of most human beings, and that is the opposition to drastic change. Ubuntu is poising itself to do what many linux users have dreamed of for years. Mainstream acceptance. A chance to make it worthwhile for the masses to use and proprietary developers to consider. Sure linux has been easy to use and configure for anyone who has a medium level of technical ability and motivation but people like that are in the minority not the majority.

Your cynic and distasteful remarks, comments and insults could turn a potential new linux user away from trying linux. Not to criticize you directly, I just wanted to point out that for the regular shmoe the original article seems to hit the mark.

Quite funny, elements of truth in what you say of course, but at the same time you're not empathising with the fact that PART OF THE REASON why Ubuntu is ready for tsu dho nimh's desktop is BECAUSE it meets a lot of the 'ridiculous requirements' whether or not they are ridiculous - and that's not least because of all the work the Ubuntu team have put in, combined with Mark Shuttleworth's vision that it could be done like that.

And I say that as a Linux user over the last few years with a variety of distros, I will never voluntarily use a Windows again - but the Ubuntu family, especially Kubuntu, give me a Linux distro I'm happy not only to use myself, but also to give away to users of all skill levels, and know that they stand a fighting chance of getting a working system up and running.

<!--douche-->Pants in a twist ?

There will always be a little "guru" corner of the internet just for you, my friend, but to deny someone access to FOSS software because they're not as "nerdy" as you is purely asinine.

So you were never a n00b yourself ?
You woke up one day and suddenly had "guru" Linux power ?
Praise the Lord !

Proper sarcasm takes a little more effort to be entertaining.
A cool level headed reply on the article is what is called for.
Instead of foul mouthed invective.

Surely a "guru" like yourself has no problems writing a level headed direct rebuttal to the article than personal attacks on the author ?

Having a button that can upload your blog in a second doesn't mean you should upload your writing a second after writing it.
